Many do not know that panic attacks in children are considered as a major psychological problem which may just involve a lack in communication skills. In child counseling, one of the most important factors in the child’s psychological and emotional balance is the parent-child communication. A lack in this communication can be the reason why there are panic attacks in children. Parents must know what this may involve so they could help their children deal with issues without panicking.

Children Are Stressed

No matter how parents ignore it, the fact is that children are stressed out. Maybe the stress are not the same as those which parents face every day, but definitely panic attacks in children can be triggered by their own stressors. It is important for the parent and the child counselor in school to monitor what these stressors are.

Children Can Be Cruel

Children in schools today face their own level of societal stress. The peer pressure can be very hard to deal with, especially when it is these same peers who are being cruel. The pressure can be anything from economics to how thin someone is, how tall the other is, the sexual orientation of one, the grades of the other, even to the clothes worn in schools. Children compare themselves with others and in schools there are the cliques who are more successful and may be cruel to those who are not so successful. If the stress gets to be too much, this will obviously trigger panic attacks in children.

As Young As 10 Years of Age

According to some studies, panic attacks in children as young as 10 years old are more common than one would think. In fact, adults who have been diagnosed with Panic Disorder may have experienced their first panic attack at this age.

Recognizing Panic Attacks in Children

Many have asked how they can recognize panic attacks in children. Unfortunately, it is the lack of communication skills which can go against both child and parent in this case. Many adults simply do not understand that panic attacks in children can happen much less recognize what they are. Many parents, and unfortunately, teachers, write the symptoms of panic attacks in children as a demand for attention, being spoiled brats, acting out and just being plain stupid. This is a really sad case of miscommunication, but unfortunately, this is the plain truth.

Symptoms of Panic Attacks in Children

The symptoms of panic attacks in children are basically the same with the adults: there is an overwhelming feeling of doom, dizziness, nausea, headaches in many cases, trembling and an increase in heart rate. In many children, they may even exhibit breathing problems or hyperventilation, in some, a pseudo-asthmatic attack. There have even been some cases where the panic attacks in children have only one symptom: coughing.

Other Signs of Panic Attacks in Children

Other signs of panic attacks in children may include violent behavior, extreme sadness, being unreasonably mad at the world, over sleeping, lack of sleeping, mood shifts, loss of appetite, and sudden increase of appetite. Many children exhibit their own signs and symptoms of panic attacks in children but they all mean one thing: that the stress levels may have reached their maximum and the child can no longer deal with them.

Toddler backpack is one of the most prized possessions in a young child’s life and one of the many things that they fancy. While their teddies give them a sense of security, these little toddler backpacks that they could carry at school, for a vacation or simply wherever they go give them a sense of ownership, individuality, and responsibility apart from the independence that they can carry their stuffs on their own.

It is kids’ nature to carry things they like around with them – and there’re so many of them! – thus makes toddler backpacks to be very convenient. Toddler backpack is used for keeping basically anything that the child wants to place in it – from toys, school supplies, books or other light personal belongings. Therefore we must provide them the best backpacks that suit them, with all due considerations to many aspects, from the design to durability.

So how do we choose the best toddler backpack for your kid while at the same time considering his preferences?

First things first: safety is our priority. You’re highly encouraged to buy toddler backpacks with harness or reins. Some children don’t like to be held at all times. They want to move on their own especially if they can already walk, and they can do it freely without you worrying where they have gone with the help of reins attached to their toddler backpacks. It’s best for shopping, walking in the park or traveling somewhere. And choose the one with reflective piping feature on it – it comes handy when you’re walking with your kid at night or near busy roads.

You see, toddler backpacks come in different designs, shapes, and sizes. It would be best to let your child choose the design and shape that he wants for his toddler backpack. Remember, your child will be the one to use it, and he will be happy to use something that he likes. Buying something that he doesn’t like is a waste of money. If he wants popular cartoon characters, go on. If he wants bags that are shaped like animals – monkey, lion, or beetle – let them.

Meanwhile, you may help the child choose one that is bright and colorful. More importantly, your task is to check the quality and features of the design he chose. Make sure the zippers are large and durable enough for easy manipulation and as children love to play with them (sometimes breaking them unintentionally).

Make sure it has many pockets inside so your child will be able to organize its content more easily, preferably a small pocket with zipper where he may keep coins. Check if it has side pocket or compartment for a water bottle.

Choose one with strong stitching and is made from durable material that do not easily fray or tear, preferably waterproof as toddler is always equivalent to mess.

The toddler backpack shouldn’t also be too big for your little tyke nor too small that only a few stuff could fit inside. Standard size is 13 inches high, 11 inches wide, and expands 4 inches deep. It must be padded and has adjustable shoulder straps for comfort and to put not so much strain on the shoulder.

Buy one that is easy to wear and use. If your child isn’t comfortable with a standard toddler backpack, you may consider buying him toddler rolling backpacks for easy transport. Can be carried on his back or pulled with the help of built-in wheels without hassle, it also eliminates potential risks for back, neck or shoulder problems that heavy (just in case your child put so many things in it) backpacks may cause. Just make sure the retractable handle can be released and pushed back easily. Also, don’t forget to remind your child to be careful not to let his fingers get caught in the handle as he pushes it back.

For a more personal touch, personalize the toddler backpack by having their names embroidered in it. Make it extra special by sewing their name using strings of their favorite color although some suppliers may do the job for you. Phrases like “I’ll be the best I can be” and “I’m a good kid” are also nice. These don’t only emphasize the uniqueness of the bag, and the feeling it brings to the child that he is a unique individual, but is also helpful for easy identification at school, in case your child has classmates with the same toddler backpack design.

Also, regularly check what’s inside. Make sure your child doesn’t overfill the bag that makes it hard for him to carry unless you fancy carrying a cute little Dora the Explorer backpack.

Toddler backpacks are not only cute displays that children carry with them; it proves to be a useful belonging that teaches a child to be independent and responsible more than anything.

By checking the qualities and features of a toddler backpack that the child personally chose, you make buying a toddler backpack a collaborative task without denying the child his ability to choose what he likes and to decide for his own.

Just take your time while choosing for the best toddler backpack. More importantly, have fun with your child during the process. Make toddler backpack hunting a bonding time with them.

One of the basics in child counseling techniques is to address the relationship between a child and the parent or parents. In many cases, a simple behavioral problem may escalate into a full blown psychological problem if the parent-child relationship is unstable.

What is child counseling?

Many individuals think that child counseling involves a psychologically imbalanced child and the therapy with a child counselor. This is so far out from the truth and unfortunately many cannot understand that in child counseling, the child is fundamentally, mentally healthy. These children just face some situations which they may have a hard time dealing with. The child counseling involves many techniques that could help the children and their families deal with the problems.

What are involved?

Child counseling involves many aspects in the life of a child. One of these is the relationship between a child and their parent. The child counseling will involve talking with and helping a child communicate with their parent about their issues. In child counseling , the communication process between the child and the parent can be mediated by the child counselor. In child counseling, there are some cases where the parent may also have to go through their own counseling to learn how to cope with the communication problems they have with their own children.

Who is the focus?

In child counseling, the counselor focuses on the child. The counselor has to find out how the environment at home and in school can affect the psychological development of the child. At home, it is the parent or parents who are the authority figure of the child but they must also learn to communicate with each other to make the relationship work. If there is seen a lack in this communication, the child may not be able to cope with whatever issues that may challenge them. With communication, the child has a better chance to deal with these issues for the parent becomes their emotional support rather than just the financial support.

The relationship between parent and child

Many in child counseling find that the parent-child relationship plays a huge role in a child’s psychological health. This is especially true in families who are undergoing or have undergone a divorce, where the family is non-traditional and where there is no parent at all. Children of divorce are stressed out emotionally and may at times blame themselves of the divorce. Although many parents try to communicate with their children at this time, their very own personal issues may get in the way. In many cases, parents who are going through a divorce may lock out their own children because of their own pains.

Where child counseling is offered

Child counseling can be offered in schools but with children who may need special care there are also the child counseling services and the private child counseling centers. One of the main objectives of counselors is to build a supportive environment for the child and there are times when this can only be achieved with a good child-parent relationship. It has been seen that no matter the techniques used in child counseling, if the parent-child relationship is not established, re-established or made stronger, the child counseling fails. Only with good child-parent relationship can the child finally become productive individuals and be able to face whatever issues thrown their way.

Speech therapy for toddlers is a therapy for speech problems not known to many. Toddlers most often have speech problems and these are left untreated most of the time. As a result, this may have a negative impact in his interpersonal life when he grows up.

Speech therapy for toddlers aims to develop or regain effective communication skills caused by articulation (physical defects in palates, tongue, jaws or teeth), voice (laryngeal problems) or fluency disorders (talking too fast or too slow).

One reason speech problems in toddlers are diagnosed late is because parents most often ignore the fact that something is wrong with their child, even though they notice it firsthand. When they notice their tot isn’t as talk active as other toddlers do, they would resort to thinking he’s just lagging behind and he’d catch up soon when he grows older. Nothing to be alarmed as there are really kids who are late learners.

Yes, toddlers find it hard to pronounce words correctly and make their sentences sensible. We often hear them substitute ‘f’ for ‘p’, and ‘r for w’, and these are common until age 6. But what we must watch for is if the toddler’s speech improves over time.

Therefore, parents must know normal signs that language and speech development is within the normal range or schedule or at least close to it.

We must immediately consult a physician for further assessment if: the toddler doesn’t react normally, or is indifferent, to sounds; doesn’t use gestures like waving bye-bye by 12 months; prefers gesture to communicate by 18 months; and has trouble imitating sounds by 18 months as these may be signs of hearing loss.

Toddlers over two years old must be evaluated if: they have unusual tone of voice; can’t follow simple directions; only imitates speech or actions and doesn’t produce words spontaneously; is more difficult to understand than expected for his age; isn’t talking or talking very little; talks using mostly vowels or mispronounces them; uses a word once and doesn’t use it again frequently or uses a word rather than sentences when speaking. There must be also an increase in the child’s vocabulary, and improvement in comprehension.

Speech pathologists assess the toddlers’ receptive and expressive language, sound development, clarity of speech and their oral-motor status. Then, speech therapy is scheduled according the child’s needs.

Speech therapy for toddlers usually lasts 30 minutes per session. Speech therapists usually spend 15 minutes playing with the kid while working out proper use of prepositions, eliciting a correct response, having the kid imitate them, blowing bubbles which strengthen lips and improve coordination, and practicing lip sounds and initial and final consonants coordination.

Parents can also do their share in improving the toddler’s speech. Apart from the speech therapy their speech pathologists provide, toddlers must also be stimulated at home for better improvement.

Therefore, parents must observe therapy sessions and learn to participate in the process. The speech therapist will teach you how the speech and language therapy can be reinforced.

Among these are reading stories to them, talking to them in everything that you do such as pointing out objects at the house, telling them what those things are for, encouraging speaking and imitating sounds. Singing would also be a lot of help to have them stimulated.

The best approach with speech and language delays is recognizing them early and providing treatment as soon as possible. In time, your toddler will communicate a lot better and overcome language delays.

The key to a very effective outcome of speech therapy for toddlers is incorporating therapy with play. This way, toddlers wouldn’t find the activity burdensome but rather fun and interesting, encouraging cooperation and stimulation further.

Lastly, we can’t deny the therapeutic impact of parental involvement in a child’s care, making this as most important in speech therapy for toddlers.

Eighty-four percent of prison inmates were mistreated as children. One out of three women and 1 in 5 boys are sexually mistreated by a grownup at a while throughout childhood. Families with four or even more children have greater rates of abuse and neglect, particularly if their living the weather is crowded or they reside in isolated areas. These little angels have nothing to do but release the pent up agony through child abuse poems.

A lot more than 80% of abusers really are a parent or someone near to a young child. Child abuse is much more prone to exist in the youngster’s home than per day care center. One out of 13 youngsters with a parent or guardian on drugs is physically mistreated regularly. One in each ten babies born today is born to moms who are abusing drugs. The unfathomable things happen, away from the eyes that can save them. Here are some excerpts of child abuse poems for the little angles who had suffered too much:

Chris

Against the wall
I try to hide
From his evil eyes
Im so afraid now
I’m starting to cry
He finds me weeping
Calls me ugly words,
He says it’s my fault
He suffers at work.
He slaps and hits me
And yells at me more…

I fall to the floor
With my bones nearly broken,
And my daddy continues
With more bad words spoken,
“I’m sorry!”, I scream
But it’s now much too late
His face has been twisted
Into an unimaginable shape
The hurt and the pain
Again and again
Oh please God, have mercy!
Oh please let it end!

And he finally stops
And heads for the door
While I lay there motionless
Brawled on the floor
My name is Chris
I am three,
Tonight my daddy
Murdered me.

This child abuse poem may sound like it was a scene from the movies, but how do we tend to keep a blind eye towards these suffering, innocent children? Parents with behavioral problems often use their child as an outlet for their anger.

The pain she feels is unbearable, I cant begin to explain. She’s been torn apart, From deep within the heart.
She’ll never mend again, The pain will always be there Deep down within. She’ll always feel scared.
After his finished, He kisses her cheek. Tells her she’s lovely, The best he’s had in weeks.
He cleans up himself, And makes his way out the door. She starts to shake in fear, She cant believe what just happened here.
Why did mummy let him do this? Why did she leave me here? She thinks to herself. As her world fills with unbearable doubt.
Mummy comes back in And holds her daughter close. Tells her that she’s sorry, For what happened was so gross.
“I’m oh so very sorry baby, We had to pay the rent, Daddies out of work, And this was the only option we had left.”

The police arrested her parents, And took them far away, Told the little girl. “For this they will pay”
She went to stay with other parents, Where there she was so loved. She was not locked up all day, And treated like a doll.
She is now a teenager, Who still sometimes struggles to cope. But after all these years, She has begun to regain her hope.
She still in a way loves her Parents very much, But she will never again trust them, For they stole her life.
They left her all alone, And everyday made her cry, They destroyed her life and made her live a lie.

Yes, this is a true story. People can be so cruel. Human trafficking can go so far as to have kids being robbed out of their youth. How sad and painful it might be, this child abuse poem can only help them through all of it.

Another child abuse poem titled “Auroura” is another heartbreaking poem about a little girl with drug and alcohol abusive parents. She was always in the attic, abused by her parents whenever they want to. One night marked her last, she died with her bear in her arms, as she was stabbed to death. This work of art clearly depicts that abuse knows no boundaries. Nothing is mild, moderate or severe.

You shouldn’t be afraid to request for help. Don’t think anyone who states something bad may happen should you talk. Things are only to improve compared to what they are now. Let these child abuse poems make you realize that in this war against abuse, you are not alone. Fight until the very end; there are people who can help you get out of there.

When children learn to walk and starts to go school on their own, kids tracking may be the first thing to pop on your mind. Not because it just happens but because your instinct tells you that their safety is your concern. As parents, we want our kids to be within our sight at all times as much as possible, because we want to make sure they’re safe at all cost.

Parents may share the same sentiments about toddlers and preschoolers: going out to public places with them is always a great challenge because it is almost synonymous with the risk of losing track of them. Having a history of losing track of them in malls doesn’t help to relieve the anxiety either.

Kids tracking was once thought to be very difficult; but not nowadays when technology has made all things almost possible. Child tracking devices have been available in the market and they’ve been proven worthy of every single buck spent.

How does it work then?

Child tracking devices, like the Global Positioning System (GPS) type, is a handheld and pocket-size device that lets you know the whereabouts of your kids. It works by enabling you to view the current location of your child and even the route he traveled – very useful when you child gets lost. Just send a text message to the device and voila, you can easily go where he is. As easy as that.

Moreover, you may set boundaries or SecuraFence within any place you go. Once your child crosses that boundary – meaning, he’s getting far away from the safe place you set or he knows – you will be automatically informed by the device via an email, or text message. Another advantage is its size. Since it is just less than the size of the palm, this practical device may be attached to your child’s lanyard, shoes, or backpack. For a more secure attachment, you may place it in his belt.

Meanwhile, the Radio Frequency kids tracking device type is used for short distances, like in malls or at zoo. Just press the button in the remote and then the transmitter in your child will beep very loudly, allowing you to know where he is.

These two kids tracking devices are costly, with the GPS type at $700 plus and the Radio Frequency type at $200. Though pricey and can be less effective in certain circumstances, this still proves to be a good investment especially if you have the money to dish out.

Raising children may not really be easy especially when caring for hyperactive kids who go everywhere they want to go, gone in their seats in less than a second that you leave them. Add the fact that kids like to explore their environment. But with the help of kids tracking devices together with constant reminders to your kids stay with you at all times, missing children should not be the least of your worries.

But remember that kids tracking devices are only backup tools to provide safety for your children; ultimately, serious and active conversation with your kids and persistent reminders regarding safety matters – never talk to strangers, what to do if they get lost, how to contact you, and other stuffs – are still far more important than this. Only then you can have that peace of mind that he is safe when you’re not around.

Children have no price tags; you don’t buy them anywhere. Yes, with kids tracking devices now available, it’s still better to be safe and sure than be too sorry in the end.

Thousands of children die from road accidents every year, stressing further the importance of road safety for children. In fact, the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) revealed that nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents. From this we can infer that on any given day nearly 700 children are harmed due to accidents on our roadways. And of the 250,000 kids injured each year, approximately 2,000 die.

Sadly, most of these road accidents could have been lessened, if not prevented, had we been more careful and vigilant that lives are at the expense when we talk about roads and driving, had we been more aware of the importance of road safety for children.

A lot of considerations encompass road safety for children. Parents, motorists, and children themselves must be well-informed and must work hand in hand to achieve roads that are safe to tread on.

If you’re a parent and you’re crossing the road with your preschool kids always make sure that you walk on the side facing the road (the unsafe side), not your children. Hold their hands all the time while walking by the pavement; not their hand holding on to you. Read: All the time. Always. Never let go. I can’t stress this enough. I should know. I have met two car accidents in my life already blame it to that simple rule we overlooked. Better learn from other people’s mistakes than experiencing it yourself and be too sorry in the end. Going back, if you have kids more than you can hold at once, use of reins would be a great idea.

There will come a time that your preschool will learn to go to school by himself without you holding his hands while walking. Even so, he can still be independent while staying safe. Instruct your kids to ask for the assistance of a traffic officer when crossing streets in school zones. Rest assured there is one there.

Choose a safe place to cross, preferably on pedestrian lanes or crossing. Reiterate the importance of waiting on the pavement together with other people until all the vehicles coming from both directions have finally stopped and when the red traffic light says so, because only then it is safe to cross. As much as possible, go along with other people when crossing. And always be alert. Scan the area as you walk.

If there are overpass or underpass nearby, make use of them, it’s a lot safer. Check if all cars are on a halt before crossing, see if there are any approaching vehicles. And when you’re approaching the other end of the crossing, watch out for cyclists and motorists who may not see you. Beware of narrow alleys where motorists could suddenly pop up. And wear bright or fluorescent clothes during the day for easy visibility and reflective materials at night.

Perhaps the most important of all, teach your kids to never ever cross the road while using their mobile phone or while listening to music with their head phones on. We’ve heard students who have been killed by massive ten-wheelers which have lost breaks. Did they not hear the truck blaring at them? No, blame those loud headphones stuck in their ears. You don’t want that to happen to you, I suppose. Do remember there is a perfect time for everything. You may use your phone anytime you want but please not when crossing the road or driving your parent’s car. Your gadgets can never replace your life. Ever. Drivers out there are not exempted from this friendly reminder. It’s a shame when people don’t practice what they preach about road safety for children and all the hullabaloo, especially to adults whom the youth look up to.

And of course, it may sound vey cliché: Wear seat belts and use child safety seats when driving. And stay alert at all times: remember cyclists and motorcyclists use the roads as well.

With all these reminders, one thing remains clear: our roads are definitely not safe today – actually it never was – especially for children. And if we adults fail to play our part responsibly to alleviate this preventable road fiasco, if we do not set good example among the children, and if we continue to overlook the fact that what we are talking about here are precious lives – the hope of the future generation in this case – all of the children’s effort and vigilance to provide and live in a safe world will just die in vain.

We must work altogether in upholding road safety for children. We can’t stress road safety to children more than enough.

Bullying, which was once thought a normal transient rite of passage that everyone goes through, has drastically propagated and its traumatic impact on victims now calls for a serious immediate action more than ever. Apparently, it’s not going away anytime soon, if we’re not going to act now.

The figures scream it all out aloud, making us speechless in disbelief.

School bullying statistics in 2010 reveal that about 160,000 children miss school every day out of fear of being bullied. One out of 10 students drops out or changes school due to repeated bullying. Another statistic showed that a child is being bullied in every 7 minutes. Only 4% of this is reported to adults and school authorities; 11% receives peer intervention; and unfortunately, 85% remains unreported.

What made things more alarming is that the forms of bullying no longer just involves painful physical contact, destroying one’s personal property or clothing, verbal abuse, spreading rumours, and name calling confined in the four walls of the classroom or in the school premises but also traumatic emotional assaults in the cyberspace. Yes, thanks to technology, bullies have found yet another medium to extend their iniquity at is has taken even in the form of cyber bullying, fuelling the rise of bullying cases further.

Bullying in schools statistics showed that bullies have found new haven in bashing and rumours aimed maliciously at a single student in the World Wide Web and this has been becoming more prevalent than physical assaults. It is as if talking bad right in your face or assaulting you in school isn’t enough, these bully will continue the craze by anonymously hitting you hard with hurtful comments in the internet – supposedly a safe sanctuary in the comforts of your home.

People often do not understand how difficult it is to be bullied until they experience one or until it happens to their loved ones. It pierces through one’s self-confidence and drags it to the very bottom. This would eventually reflect on the poor grades on report cards. One will definitely have a hard time concentrating, sleeping or eating. Clearly there is something wrong going on and yet the child cannot divulge it easily due to fear. They, too, are most likely to suffer from depression or anxiety until late adulthood. See how far those silly pranks can get?

Worse, one who gets bullied may become a bully too, as a way to get back, worsening the scenario further. It explains why and how an abused child at home emerges as a bully.

And if worse comes to worst, what others think of as simple pranks to pull off or turning their classmates into punching bags, have become so deterrent and so traumatic it affects the normal development of innocent victims. It has shattered thousands of lives already and even claimed the lives of undeserving ones.

How?

The victims commit suicide, due to the unbearable psychological stresses bullying has brought. Termed as bullycide, it is a significant link between bullying, being bullied, and suicide and it is very common among bullied adolescents. In fact, bullying in school statistics showed that it is one of the leading causes of death under 14 years old.

But why is bullying so prevalent? It’s because the bullied child have lost confidence in himself and the fear that the bully may further get back on him again if he tells the adults about the bullying act. Hence, open communication between parents and children must be maintained and the former must be observant of bullying signs. School authorities must be informed as well as the parents of the bully. It is the only way to straighten those bullies out and stop them from victimizing others.

Also children must be taught to be assertive and socialize with groups of classmates as there is strength in number. Remember, bully preys on those they feel are weaker than them.

Bullies deserve proper disciplinary measures, if not suspended or expelled from the school, or detained in juvenile detention centers – they must face the dire consequences of their actions.

Bullying is a factor to violence, homicide and other evil acts later in life. But in some instances, bullies may have also been victims of bullies, or have been physically abuse at home. They do this to retaliate, avenge and get even. Bullying in schools statistics also revealed that bullies are more likely to be involved in smoking and drinking alcohol, and do more poorly academically. Though clearly still not an excuse to hurt others, what must be addressed is the root of it in the bullies’ homes.

Any forms of bullying must be stopped now. And children must be spared from physical abuse at home. Otherwise, the vicious cycle continues.

Children have the right to live in a peaceful place, like a safe school, and their dreams and ego shouldn’t just be shattered by their abominable contemporaries who are most often victims of abuse themselves.

Bullying in schools statistics have revealed more than enough. It’s high time that we act and send these horrible figures back to zero where they truly belong.

Having a baby within the household is certainly a thrilling yet difficult for the people inside the household. Safety factors are very important whatsoever occasions inside the house; babies are fragile and very prone to accidents that may put their life in danger, no matter how grave the accident may be. It’s recommended to have the gates with thick plastic guard stapled to it. Baby gates aren’t for bacteria. They’re made to avoid injuries, not ailments triggered by bacteria. However, some baby gates for stairs have dust filters that may get the job done.
